Are Coursera and Udemy courses recognised in Singapore?
The short answer is: Yes – but maybe not in the way you think.
What they offer you is the chance to boost your skills.
There are many transferable skills that you can gain from Coursera and Udemy. And you can use these skills to enhance your resume.
Nowadays, it’s not only academic qualifications that matter. Skills and experience are of huge importance to companies, too!
For instance, here are some requirements that are taken from job postings online:

Notice anything these listings have in common?
None of them state any required academic qualifications (e.g. A-Levels or a university degree)!
Instead, what many companies seem to focus on nowadays are experience and your skillset.
Soft skills like good time management and critical thinking are huge selling points.
Hard skills like graphic design and photoshop can also set you apart from other candidates.
In short, knowing things in theory is very different from actually knowing how to apply them in practice.
And that’s what’s important to companies right now: making sure that you can actually do what you’re supposed to.
As someone currently deep in the trenches of job hunting, all my interviews have supported this.
My academic qualifications are barely addressed. Instead, I’ve had to provide concrete examples of how I’ve applied my skills.
In short, interviewers want to know how I can be of tangible value to the company.
Are Coursera and Udemy courses credible?
Yes! There are different benefits that come with Coursera and Udemy.
Coursera
Coursera partners with over 200 universities.

The courses offered are taught by established professors from these various universities, making the courses on Coursera very credible.
In fact, NTU even has a program that allows students to take courses on Coursera, and transfer these credits to their degree!
Udemy
In contrast, Udemy allows anyone to create and market their courses on the platform. This means that you may not be learning from accredited professors or educators.
However, there are many more courses offered on Udemy.
A quick look at their homepages confirms this. Udemy boasts 185,000 courses, while Coursera offers over 5,000.
According to Udemy’s website, big companies such as Adidas and HSBC have utilised their courses too.
In short, Udemy offers you a lot more variety. You can also learn skills that don’t necessarily need to be taught by professional educators.
